WEEK 9
SCRIPTURE:
THEME: The Goodness of God's law
FOR WE KNOW THAT THE LAW 15 GOOD, IF ONE USES IT LAW FULLY 1 Timothy 1:8

We who live in the United States of American under a free Democratic system are often guilty of two sins with regard to our form of government. First of all we take it for granted and assume everyone has the liberty that we enjoy. Second we fail to recognize the roots of that system. With regard to the second sin, I must say that it is to our shame that we don't recognize how much the founding fathers of this country and for that matter, every European country, relied on the Law of Moses as contained in the Word of God in the formation of their judicial system and other laws with regard to their government.

I believe that this lack of understanding with regard to the roots of the system leads to the other sin of taking it for granted. If we fully appreciated that these laws are God's laws and that in many cases they are just as applicable today as when given to Moses, we would praise God for His wisdom in giving our lives direction and showing us how to live at peace with one another.

If, God forbid, tomorrow an atomic war destroyed all the governments and nations and cultures on this planet, whoever survived could start over anew--provided they had a Bible and used the Law of Moses as a basis to form a new government and society.

How timeless is God's wisdom for our lives. As Paul told Timothy, "the Law is good if one uses it lawfully." We as believers on this side of the Cross know that the Law was never meant to save us; only Christ can do that. But it is important for us to recognize the goodness of the Law and that while its precepts will not save us spiritually, they are important as they form the center of our judicial system and secular government.

There is a movement in this country to do away with any mention of God or His Word with regard to our government. This is impossible without completely destroying the government as God's Laws form the very foundation of our system. Hopefully we can see the importance of recognizing that the foundation for our government has an eternal source and having recognized that fact, we will appreciate it more and thank God that we live in a country that upholds His timeless eternal truths.

Activity Idea

Parents, discuss with your children the importance of living in a country that upholds Christian values. Try to imagine what the nation would be like it were ruled by godless people and the Godfearing people had no input with regard to forming and enforcing laws.

Discuss the fact that although the Law is not the means to salvation, it is still a major influence in our lives with regard to its moral precepts and that it forms the basis of many of our secular laws.
