SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 29:31-35 THEME: BE BE WHAT YOU ARE Leah lived with her younger sister, Rachel, a beauty queen. Unfortunately, Leah was no beauty. Her name means cow. Her looks were so lacking that Laban, her father, had to trick a man into marrying her. When Jacob discovered the trick, he was very angry. All these factors and more led Leah to feel bad abut herself. Leah knew that she was unloved but God also knew and He did something about it. What finally brought happiness into her life? One might be tempted to think it was her sons that made her heart light. She named her first son Rueben, which means "see, a son". She believed that God consoled her with a son. Leah's second son was named Simeon, which means "to hear", for she believed that the Lord heard that her husband did not love her. Levi, which means "attached", expressed her hope that finally her husband would "attach" himself to her and love her. After three sons Leah was still unloved. Why? Because she was depending on others for acceptance. Finally, God gave her a fourth son and she named him Judah, which means "praise". No longer would she weep because Jacob did not love her but she would rejoice because now she understood God's boundless and unconditional love for her.
Ask your family how they think of themselves. How does God think of them? Are these different? Convey the knowledge that they do not ever have to wonder if they are important because God knows that they are important. Have everyone write a list of things God has done for them that proves His love for each of His children. Memorize: I John 3:1 Charles D.
