Who Are These People Known as the churches of Christ?

Worldwide there are some 20,000 congregations of churches of Christ with a total membership of around 3 million. Congregations exist in over 100 countries. One can find both small and large congregations in every state. The greatest numerical strength, however, lies in the southern United States.

Several years ago, Dr. Hans Kung published a book entitled The Church. In that book he bemoans the fact that the established church has lost its way. He identifies it as being so burdened with tradition that it has failed to become what Jesus desired it to be. According to Dr. Hung, the answer for the stagnation problem could be found in returning to the Scriptures. When revisited, they would reveal the essence of the original church which then could be reclaimed by the modern church.

In the later part of the 18th century, men of differing denominational background reached that same conclusion. While they studied independently of each other, they all arrived at some of the same conclusions and asked some of the same questions...

  • Why not go back behind all denominationalism to the simple purity and teaching of the Scripture?
  • Why not use only the Bible and put aside all man-made creeds and doctrines?
  • Why not plant the seed (the Word of God - Luke 8:11) and allow it to produce the same crop it produced in the first century?

These eighteenth century spiritual "trend setters" began pleadings for people to throw off denominationalism doctrines and creeds. Instead of being obedient to what the human theological mind had devised, they urged people to be obedient to what God had revealed within Scripture. They also emphasized that returning to the primitive practices of the first-century church would not create some new denomination, but simply be returning to the original organism began by a crucified Savior.

Today members of the churches of Christ are still enthusiastic about this approach to the church. They attempt to propagate a non-denominational body of Bible believers, who accept the power of Scripture as ultimate authority for all beliefs and practices. The lack of human regimentation and hierarchy, allows each autonomous congregation freedom to accomplish expedient issues as best serves their own body needs. This means that within our fellowship, opinions may vary from body to body. In these areas of Biblical liberty, each congregation practices their own understanding of Biblical expediency.

Individual members use the Scriptures to develop a deeper walk with God. The catalyst for that relationship is the blood of Christ. Becoming an adopted son or daughter of the Creator is only the beginning of a lifetime challenge to become more like the Master. Members are just ordinary people, washed in the blood of Jesus, and making an honest attempt to imitate Him more completely. No claim is made, by congregation or individual, to spiritual perfection or achievement of complete obedience! We are not a showcase of sinless saints! We are, in reality, a hospital of sinners who trust the Great Physician for our continual healing.

If this spiritual premise is of interest to you, please feel free to contact us. Our desire is to restore the church of the first-century and to assist honest, sincere people who wish to dig beneath human hindrances and discover the life-altering spiritual truths revealed by God's Word!

Also consider our offer for a FREE Bible correspondence course. Many have found this an excellent way to travel down the road to a closer relationship with God. Lessons are sent and returned through the mail.

If you live in our geographic location, we also invite you to consider how any of our special service ministries may be of benefit to you.

  • Worship Assemblies
  • Bible Classes
  • Children's Library and Children's Bible Hour
  • Campus Ministry at University of Nebraska
  • Prison Ministry
  • Overcomer's Support Group
  • Weigh Down Workshops

We also invite our local web users to request an in-home Bible study. Many of our members enjoy sharing themselves and their faith in this way. Several options are available for such studies: open Bible study (examining themes, books, etc. from the Bible itself), using topical lesson outlines as a guide, or watching and discussing a video Bible survey study. All these services are offered without charge and in the spirit of helping others develop a more Biblical walk with the Lord. You can contact the church office to make arrangements for your in-home study.
